ABOUT SOYA
The Sports Personality of the Year Award was founded in 2004 by former world marathon holder and IOC member, Dr.Paul Tergat. The objective of the event is to recognize outstanding performers in sports in Kenya.
The selection and vetting of nominees are received and eventual announcement of winners is undertaken by a panel of judges selected from sports editors and senior reporters from the leading print and electronic media houses in Kenya.
OBJECTIVES
- To recognize, reward and motivate sports men and women with outstanding performances each year in their own area of specialization at various levels of competition (local, regional, continental and global)
- To raise the profile of sports in Kenya through an annual awards program thus promote sports for all career, leisure and health
- To use sports as an agent for social change, especially amongst the youth by identifying role models
- To create links between sports and corporate organizations, which are mutually beneficial
