NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 1 – Double world champion and world record holder Faith Kipyegon has clinched the sportswoman of the year award at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) on Friday night.

This is the third time that the 30-year old has been named Kenya’s sportswoman of the year.

Kipyegon had a stellar campaign in 2023, successfully defending her 1500m world title in Budapest, Hungary, and topping that up with the 5,000m title as well.

She had also erstwhile broken records in the 1500m, 5,000m and the mile, though the 5,000m record was later lowered by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.

Beatrice Chebet, the 5km World Champion was the first runner up while 800m world champion Mary Moraa was the second runner up.

“I am so greatly and honoured to be awarded for the third time. To all athletes, I want to wish you a great year. Asante for this trophy,” Kipyegon said, in a video address as she could not make it for the awards gala.
