SHUJAA’S WIN CHALLENGE TROPHY IN LAS VEGAS SEVEN’S
Kenya’s Seven rugby team, Shujaa, posted a 21 – 14 win over Samoa, New Zealand awarding them the Challenge Trophy in the pool matches at the USA Sevens in Las Vegas.
This is Kenya’s second Challenge Trophy Kenya has won after the diadem in Wellington, New Zealand in January.
Collins Injera scored the decisive try as Kenya defeated Chile 21-19 in a closely contested match in the Challenge Trophy quarter finals and saw off France 14 – 7 in the Challenge Trophy Semi-Final
Samoans came through strong in the second half with Tila Mealoi scoring and converted two quick tries as Tietjens’ charges came right back into the party.
They got a second try with a small kick and chase seeing the ball take an awkward bounce to avoid Injera and Mealoi picking up for a touchdown under the posts.
Skipper Andrew Amonde put in a shift scoring the winning try with only a minute left on the clock in the fifth leg against Samoa at the Sam Boyd Stadium.
Following a questionable performance in New Zealand and Australia, Head Coach Innocent Simiyu assured that the Kenya Seven’s rugby team had worked on closing games in the second half.
