OMWELA RE-ELECTED AS KRU CHAIRMAN, TARGETS 2019 WORLD CUP

The conclusion of the aggressively contested Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman position saw the re-election of Richard Omwela.

The election was held yesterday evening during the KRU Annual General Meeting where Omwela with 25 votes beat former Deputy Chair, Sasha Mutai by a mere 2 votes and Western Bulls Chairman Rajinder Sembi with 9 votes for a two-year position.

“I am pleased to have been re-elected and I want to thank the affiliates for voting me in. It hasn’t been an easy process but we are happy we could see the end of it,” said Omwela

Omwela hinted that as much as he felt that he deserved another term, that this would be his final term.

“My focus will be to qualify for the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and every effort must be done towards that because Kenya has never played in the World Cup before. If I achieve that before I leave then I will say goodbye with a smile. That is my priority,” added Omwela.

Mutai accepted defeat but decried the existence of “cartels” within the Union adding that KRU is not a political movement and should not be treated as such.
